Just prior to the lowering of flows, guys reported steelhead hook ups at the dam and overflow pools and scattered downstream thru the fast water gravel stretches for spawning fish. As quickly as flows were restored in the Oak over the past weekend the fishing likewise perked up again with some steelhead hooked and a few knarly Kings clinging to a hopeful life. Watch for other changes soon like more content to this website. There was another couple inches of wet snow and something like a 0.25 inch of rain thru last night. Flows in the other area smaller tribs are low and mostly clear with some icy conditions. Real light fishing pressure except for a few guys fishing nearer the dam and they have been getting hook ups. Albion, NY 14411 Scattered fish movement reported, that hoped for cool down would likely encourage more smaller trib movement. The other area smaller tribs have med or slightly high and stained flows. Thanks to the abrupt cold and snow and wind all the tribs are essentially frozen in. Flows in the Oak are about medium and barely stained with about 2 feet of visibility for now. The best spinner/fly set up is DW Gator Flasher Spindoctor with an A-TOM-IK BAM fly. There seems to be a stalemate between the open Lake temps and the trib water temps thanks to the relatively mild winter. The chance to fish from your own two feet for trout and salmon you measure in pounds, not inches, for 7 9 months depending upon weather and water conditions. Strong upstream headwater supplies are likely driving the water feed below the dam. Well have to wait and see how much flows will change but it should bring flows up high but not blown. From Capt. Before things got too blown up yesterday guys reported some AM pier action. Flows are something like med to slightly high with 1 2 ft of visibility. No quick start to the salmon action yet. Lake conditions have been very erratic over the last week. Kings have for the most part given up the ghost and now some carcasses are seen seeding the waterway. Thanks, Capt. The last 2 days the salmon have moved closer and closer to the rivers. The green water is ideal but you can often have action in dirtier water then you think. For now temps are in the high 30s F and falling short of the predicted near 50 F. Look for all the trib flows to be on the rise and going off color. A spate of water there too might drop back fish to downstream spots where guys are drifting and also bring on the last of the fresh run fish. On the dates not included above both before and after anglers can still fish any of the water adjacent to the Archers Club but access will have to be by walking and wading from downstream at the Park Ave Ext Fishing Trail or from upstream at the Waterport dam. Plenty of water cover in the Oak for a few fresh brown trout or getting toward more post spawn fish. Flows in the Oak are responding nicely to a few days of previous cold with dropping and clearing. Fishing pressure, no doubt, is light though. Many still in good green shape with some old moldies now on Halloween zombie patrol downstream. Greater impacts expected SW of here but the south shore of Lake Ontario may get some accumulations. Next chance at precipitation or showers is this weekend. Chance for more downpours thru tonight with strong winds and an advisory forecast thru tomorrow. Fishable flows we have now in Johnson, Oak and Sandy largely a result of bolstered Erie Canal flows. Some rain on the order of a 1/4 inch fell last night but not a big change in trib flows. Without any persistent cold or snow or ice hanging in, these precipitation events are going to keep water color on the stained side. This area will be on the far end of it. And that flat downstream water on the Oak is just tougher to fish period except for good float techniques or cast/retrieve. Without access back to Lake Ontario, those overflow fish are likely goners unless theres a perfectly timed spate of water later this spring. All our boat ramps are open. That being said, the fish holding thermocline is yoyoing between 30 to over 100 down. A fall cool down on the backside of the weekend rains is upon us! Downstream fast water drifts and all the way to the downstream flat water has been quietly productive at times too, esp if youre there intercepting a pod of fresh fish moving thru. The last few weeks out of Bald Eagle Marina we have been fishing offshore as there has been some good steelhead action with a few teenage kings in the mix. It is equipped with the latest electronics and fishing equipment. So far thru today the heavier rains have been south of here and the trend looks like the Oak is on the rise while the smaller tribs are barely dropping or holding steady. At least whatever trib and near shore Lake Ontario trout action that is underway is not likely to experience a temp spike anytime soon. See the photo below. Water color is clearing with 2 ft or so of stained viz. Starting this weekend, they will be fishing at the Bar chasing Kings then return to the Oak around Memorial Day as the Kings migrate east. Mixed sizes today with a couple in the 10 lb range and a couple around 28 lbs, most were in the 15 to 18 lbs. Browns and Atlantics and steelhead in the mix. Some reports of stained water color to the east which could be a result of Canal drainage. That could be the ticket to get some salmon migrations cranking. Otherwise its a little tough to report on average fishing conditions. Thru this beginning part of the week, most hook up action has still been mostly for Kings. And maybe into the early spring! There were a few Monday morning oh-dark thirty hook-ups at the Oak Orchard Rivermouth. As of today flows were high consisting of something close to wide open turbine flows and a little bit of overflow water. The other area smaller tribs have similar moderate medium flows with slightly stained water color. There were some hook ups thru the past weekend right before this latest rise in flows. Most guys upstream- ish report good action while those downstream like in the flat water report tougher action. In the Oak, flows are moderate and mostly clear and likewise may hold onto those fair moderate flows instead of dropping back to real low. The fishing has been challenging not least due to the warm weather we had last week. Since 1/4 inch of rain did not do much it looks like 1/2 inch or more of rain in a storm or otherwise would be needed to effect any positive change in flows. Anglers often find flows still a bit high and a bit stained and for sure cold but thats the nature of steelheading and the chance for a multiple hook up day. Since then, the Douglaston Salmon Run has reported salmon entering the river on a consistent basis. It is still not too late to enter. First real cold night of the year Sunday night probably tightened things up for flows and runoff in the Oak and smaller area tribs as well. Land lubbers and small boat casters and small boat trollers and streamer casters all can get in on the cool water near shore action while it lasts. Remember use caution in interpreting the upstream USGS gauging stations on the Oak that can mean little or nothing for flows downstream of the Waterport hydro especially in considering both the turbine channel and overflow channel. So no big change in flows yet in the Oak. Chance of legitimate winter weather and temps coming on by next week. Look for post spawn browns to be redistributed thru the waterways and the chance for some fresher steelhead. Still light fishing pressure yet the regulars who are getting out there are getting their hookups like nearer the dam. In addition to seasonal factors, daily water levels are affected by heavy leaf fall. Wrap around Lake Effect Snow after the storm may bring all the snow accumulations north and south about equal anyway. Flows in the Oak are still slightly high and water color has improved with 2 ft of visibility. You might expect the water color to be dirtier for the height it is. Flows in the other tribs bracketing east and west look like they are back up some. Riggers were parked at 75 & 85 ft with fixed cheaters 10 ft above. Either way itll be colder with continued clearing and lowering flows like in the Oak. Look for calmer winds on the backside of choppy Lakeshore conditions that leave that semi stained water in range of the pier head and land lubber caster. Temps are forecast in the lower 30sF for highs and dropping back into the 20s at night with some colder temps in the upcoming forecast.
